August 3, 2018 Barnes

We spent two weeks at the end of July 2018 at Villa Bucchiano. There were six of us, four adults and two kids.

Gerald and Irmgard were extremely gracious and helpful hosts. The house is lovely, bright, well appointed and

comfortable. The pool is large enough for a swim and small enough not to completely intimidate a four-year-old beginner. The view is breath-taking, heart-lifting, and, even though we were surrounded by the sounds of harvesters for a good deal of the visit (mostly in the distance) it enhanced rather than detracted from the bucolic atmosphere. The kitchen is easy to cook in, the garden a pleasure to sit in, the pool a joy to play in.

One humble recommendation, however: people who are not used to that kind of heat need fans, either floor fans or ceiling fans, both would do the trick, in the bedrooms especially, as it gets extremely hot . This was the only thing that made the house less than perfect.

As far as the surrounding countryside, Marche is one of the most unpretentious and unspoilt places we have ever been. The people are helpful, friendly and laid back. The architecture is ancient, or, if not, generally respectful to the tastes

of the ancients. Ascoli Piceno is one of the most mysterious and beautiful places you will ever see.

Sarnano is a charmer and full of ghosts. To visit Monte Rinaldo and Ortezzano is to go back in time.

Don’t miss Le Clarisse, and the gelato shop in Sarnano. Or Il Piceni, a firstrate restaurant with a magnificent view,

in Ortezzano; or a visit to the temple
